How to Seal Countertops

Stone Sealers

Stone sealers cannot completely protect natural stone from staining, but they greatly improve resistance. Sealers reduce how quickly liquids are absorbed into natural stone, but it does not make stone stain-proof. It is a protective barrier and not a permanent shield.

Sealers Do

  • Slow down absorption of the food and liquid particles

  • Give you more time to wipe spills before they penetrate

  • Helps prevent many common stains from setting

  • Protect against moisture and everyday use

  • Extend the life and appearance of the stone

Sealers Do Not

  • Stop all stains 100% of the time

  • Prevent damage from acidic substances (etching)

  • Provide protection if spills are left sitting too long

  • Seal cracks, pits, fissures, or structural weaknesses

  • Protect against oils that sit long enough to penetrate

Even the best impregnating sealers allow the stone to breathe, which means some absorption is still possible.

Why Stains Still Happen

Every natural stone has its own level of porosity.

For examples:

  • Marble & limestone: very porous
  • Quartzite: lower porosity, but still absorbent
  • Granite: varies widely between colors and quarries

Sealers buy time but if a spill sits too long, especially: hot oils, oil, grease, wine, coffee, citrus, vinegar, tomato sauces, spices (turmeric, paprika, etc.) to name a few … then the stone can still discolor.
